Excursion to Goldisthal and Erfurt
On June 11, 2018 under the direction of Eric Glende and Marc Gebhardt and in cooperation with the IEEE and the VDE, students of the Otto-von-Guericke University participated in an excursion to the pumped-storage power plant Goldisthal of the Vattenfall GmbH. At the beginnning, students were able to gain an overview of the entire facility, the operation management and the history of the facility at the Goldisthal information center. This was followed by a two-hour tour through the pumped-storage power plant with its reservoirs, caverns and engine rooms. Here it was possible to inspect equipment such as turbines, generators and transformers on site.
Afterwards the group drove to Erfurt for the generator factory of Siemens for another excursion. After a brief welcome followed a presentation about the company and its history. After being provided with the necessary safety clothing, a one-hour tour of the company´s assembly hall followed. On the basis of the guidance, the various assembly steps of generators were explained vividly and comprehensibly. Furthermore, the many emerging questions of the group could be answered expertly.
Finally, the group finished the evening with a joint dinner in Erfurt.
